Special “Diesel Days” Activities on Father’s Day Weekend!

Special “Diesel Days” Activities on Father’s Day Weekend!

On Father’s Day weekend, California State Parks and the California State Railroad Museum are offering very special “Diesel Days” activities with train rides on the Sacramento Southern Railroad featuring visually-exciting and gracefully-styled diesel locomotives.

Plus, on Father’s Day Sunday, the rarely seen Southern Pacific road switcher No. 5208 will be on special display for one day only.  Built in 1948 by Baldwin Locomotive Works and retired in 1969, SP5208 is an early diesel locomotive that represents the major effort of its day to adapt to diesel locomotive construction. Excursion train ride guests will be treated to a six-mile, 45-minute roundtrip excursion along the levees of the Sacramento River. The train features a combination of vintage closed coaches with comfortable seats and open-air “gondolas” with bench style seating.

Come one, come all!

With more than 600 riders and horses participating in the 1,966 mile route, the National Pony Express Association will conduct a 10-day, 24-hour, non-stop “Annual Re-Ride of the Pony Express Trail” from Old Sacramento to Missouri on Wednesday, June 11 - 21, 2014.

The event commemorates the 1860-1861 Central Overland and California Pikes Peak Express Company which carried letters and telegrams for 19 months to prove the Central Route through Salt Lake passable year round. The Pony Express National Historic Trail runs from California through Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas to Missouri and is the longest event held annually on a historical trail in the nation. Riders will carry commemorative letters “Pony Express-style” in a packed and locked Mochila.
