Teachers have never quibbled about the urgent need to make sure our students can read and write. Unfortunately, writing instruction has often taken a back seat to reading. To rectify this misstep, Taylor Street School is bringing balance back to the literacy equation.
Developmental Studies Center’s research-based Being A Writer uses the writing process approach in a workshop setting coupled with direct instruction. Teachers and students thrive in a real writing community where students have opportunities to learn from outstanding mentor texts in a variety of genres. They are able to choose authentic audiences and purposes for writing, and they’re given plenty of chances to work collaboratively.
