Make It a Festival Night in Sacramento

Make It a Festival Night in Sacramento

We're halfway through summer, which means it's festival time! Here are a few ways you can get your grub on at some of Sacramento's upcoming festivals.

161st Annual California State Fair, Cal Expo, July 11-27
As always, there will be hundreds of food vendors on hand at the historic fair at Cal Expo -- spaghetti ice cream, chocolate covered bacon, or fried anything -- but I especially can't wait to pick up some fresh produce from the Friends of the State Fair Farmers Market to help me stay on my healthy track! 2014 Weekly Challenge #26: Eat LOCAL!

2014 Weekly Challenge #26: Eat LOCAL!

You hear it all the time: Eat Local! But why?

Here are 8 reasons to eat local foods (taken from about.com):

1. Local Foods Are Fresher (and Taste Better)
Food that was picked within the last few days tastes way better than food that was picked (unripened) and trucked thousands of miles to get to you. And fresh food lasts longer, too.

2. Local Foods Are Seasonal (and Taste Better)
It must be said: Deprivation leads to greater appreciation. When does a cozy room feel best? When you've come in from out of the freezing cold. Fresh corn in season tastes best when you haven't eaten any in 9 or 10 months--long enough for its taste to be a slightly blurred memory that is suddenly awakened with that first bite of the season. Eating locally means eating seasonally, with all the deprivation and resulting pleasure that accompanies it... Read More

Spend your Fourth on the Field!

Spend your Fourth on the Field!

Still searching for something to do this July 4th? Come out and celebrate our nation’s birthday on the baseball field! Raley Field will bring the neighborhood block party feel to the River Cats' home turf this Friday night.

In the evening, kiddos can enjoy a fun-filled kids area equipped with games, coloring pages, face painters, and inflatable structures; local food trucks, beer, and live music from Nunchuck Taylor will entertain grown-ups.

To cap off the night, find a comfy spot on the field and watch the night sky above the ballpark light up with a spectacular fireworks show synced to patriotic music at 9:30pm. (Blankets are okay; no chairs are allowed on the field.)

Savor the Tomato During "Sacratomato Week" July 21-27!

Savor the Tomato During "Sacratomato Week" July 21-27!

Get ready to savor the tomato when the Sutter District presents the first-ever “Sacratomato Week” July 21 through 27, 2014.  All week long, the vibrant and engaging restaurants, bars and nightclubs located in midtown’s Sutter District will celebrate Sacramento’s signature commodity with tomato-themed menu options, drink specials and more.

“With our deep roots in agriculture coupled with the city’s popular ‘Farm-to-Fork’ focus, Sacramento is ripe for an event that celebrates the tomato,” said Emily Baime Michaels, Executive Director of the Midtown Business Association (which manages the Sutter District). “The Sutter District is a lively and fun group of restaurants, bars and nightclubs and we’re excited to invite the community to celebrate our first ‘Sacratomato Week’ in July. Then next year, we plan to make it an even bigger initiative that will also include a family-friendly festival as a finale to the special week-long celebration.”
